What is the origin story behind the moniker “Larry Lumens?”
Larry Lumens was something we started calling Sam Taxwood one night. He was at a party wearing the brightest headlamp I’ve ever seen. He was chatting everyone up as usual, not realizing he was blinding everyone around him. I think someone yelled “What’s up with all the lumens?!” I thought it was funny so I took the name.
When did the lightbulb go off (so to say) to start making lamps?
I’ve always liked to make things but I’m terrible at most art forms I’ve tried. Tinkering with lamps just made more sense to me. I think it’s cool how lighting sets the mood of a room. Most lights I’ve seen are pretty regular so I thought I could try to mix it up a bit.
Where do you find the supplies to make your lamps?
I get almost all of my supplies from the thrift stores near my house. Except for paint and resin and other art supplies.
So the question begs, were you always a fan of lamps?
I’ve always liked the feeling of switching on a lamp in a dark room. Lamps feel more relaxed, like it’s time to hear a story or something. Bright overhead lights make me feel like I’m in a doctor’s office.

Was this just a way to literally brighten people’s day?
You could say that. I started by making them for my friends. I tried to make them something crazy but personal.
Who are some of your favorite clients?
That’s a tough question! So far most of the people interested in my lamps are good homies. So all my “clients” are wonderful. Sam [Taxwood] has a couple, my friend Paul [Curtis] has a handful. I just made something for [Mike] Rav that was really fun. I like when someone has a specific idea and I get to try and create that.
How many times have you shocked yourself?
I’ve actually only been shocked a couple times. It’s not that bad but it definitely takes you by surprise. It feels like your whole body tightens up at once. Makes you want to throw something, Haha.
Where do you take inspiration from?
I take inspiration wherever I can get it. It helps to know the person I’m making something for and where they want to put it in their house. That helps me determine how weird or mellow the piece should be. A lot of times I just make things that I would want in my house.

Do you have a favorite lamp that you have made? If so, which one?
I think the coolest thing I’ve made is a set of chairs where the seat is a face that lights up. I made them for Brandon Cocard. I like them because they are practical and the lights are USB charged so there are no cords. I heard he brings them out for dinner parties.
Would beef between lamp makers be called lamp shade?
Yes, it’s a real thing. Lamp shade can get pretty lit.
Are there any plans to extend beyond lamps, or would you say you’ve found your medium?
I’m always trying to learn new art forms but right now I’m gonna focus on lights. Try not to get electrocuted.
Anyone you would like to thank?
I’d like to thank all the friends and family who have encouraged me to keep making things. I am definitely inspired by the community of creative people around me doing their thing, so big thank you to them.
